Locals pacing DePauw women’s hoops

The DePauw women’s basketball team started the season 10-1, and athletes from Chicago’s north and west suburbs have helped the Tigers during their hot start.

Sophomore guard Sydney Kopp, a Hinsdale South graduate, and freshman forward Claire Keefe of Libertyville are guiding the Division III school in Greencastle, Ind. As of Friday, Keefe was second on the team with 13 points per game on 47 percent shooting from the field. Kopp ranks third with 11.9 points per game on 44 percent shooting.

Keefe opened the season with a streak of nine consecutive games with double-digit points, and Kopp scored a season-high 27 points on 5-of-7 3-point shooting on Dec. 2 against Allegheny.

Keefe and Kopp are two of four players who have started every game for the Tigers this season.

Cashaw scoring, rebounding for Rice

Stevenson alumnus Connor Cashaw, a 6-foot-5 junior guard, has been an offensive machine for the Rice men’s basketball team this season.

Through 12 games, Cashaw was averaging 16.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. In back-to-back games against St. Edward’s and Texas Tech, Cashaw notched his third and fourth career double-doubles, with a career-high 27 points and 12 rebounds against St. Edward’s on Dec. 14. He followed that up by pouring in 21 points and snagging 12 rebounds against Texas Tech on Dec. 16.

Cashaw, who won a Class 4A state championship at Stevenson, also leads Rice with 16 steals.

Maine South grad celebrates career night

Nina Anderson, a Maine South alumna and junior guard on the Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team, scored 16 points on Dec. 16 in the Titans’ 92-69 win against Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Anderson’s performance tied her career-high for points.

Anderson was extremely efficient in only 15 minutes on the floor. She was 6-for-7 from the field and made all four of her 3-point attempts. Anderson, who played basketball and softball at Maine South, added two rebounds and a block in the victory.

Anderson has played at least 13 minutes in each of the last four games for the Titans. She has become an effective player off the bench for the Division III squad from Bloomington.
