Three Montrose Boy Scouts earn Eagle rank
Three Boy Scouts from Montrose Troop 317 — Kevin Tom, Ryan Januzik and Alexander Soewers — recently earned their Eagle rank, the highest award in Scouting.
Tom, son of King and Tess Tom of Glendale, joined the Scouts at age 6.
His Eagle Scout project was building a stone bench for the La Crescenta Woman’s Club in Montrose. The design includes a bronze plaque and a pipe sealed with pictures and articles that will serve as a time capsule for the club.
The base of the bench was covered with rocks from around the Crescenta Valley, donated by the members of the La Crescenta Woman’s Club and Troop 317.
Tom also enjoys playing basketball and has been coaching the youth basketball programs at the Alpine Recreation Center in Los Angeles for the past several years. He graduated from Crescenta Valley High School last year, and currently attends Cal State Northridge, with a focus on finance.
Januzik, son of David and Dawn Januzik of La Crescenta, joined Scouting with Cub Scout Pack 360.
For his Eagle Scout project, he replaced and installed 28 historical plaques that line along Honolulu Avenue in the Montrose Shopping Park.
Through Scouting, he learned many skills such as making lashings, first-aid and survival skills.
Soewers, son of Randy and Stephanie Soewers of Glendale, joined Boy Scout Troop 317 in the sixth grade.
For his Eagle Scout project, he created an instructional video for altar boys at his church, St. Anthony Greek Orthodox Church in Pasadena.
The video tutorial details the tasks boys must do at the altar on Sundays.
Soewers recently graduated cum laude from St. Francis High School, and will be attending Santa Clara University in the fall, majoring in sociology and computer science.
