Hampton Inn & Suites opens in downtown Glendale

A Hampton Inn & Suites, the brand of hotels under the Hilton Worldwide umbrella, opened a new five-story location in downtown Glendale Wednesday.

Located adjacent to the Americana at Brand, the 14½-month project was led by owners Vista Investments and contracted to national hotel builder and owners R.D. Olson Construction. The more than 57,000-square-foot, 94-room hotel is centrally located in downtown, on the corner of Colorado Street and Brand Boulevard.

Bill Wilhelm, president of R.D. Olson Construction, said the location is prime not only for its access to other major metropolitan areas, but for being at the forefront of the community-driven revitalization of downtown Glendale.

“The hospitality industry has gone through tremendous changes in the past decade or so and it’s really reaching out today to the guests, and those individuals, whether it’s the millennials or whoever it may be, are looking for a different experience,” Wilhelm said.

“The property is designed in a way that to where it’s not just a big bulky hotel with bulky rooms, it truly offers the amenities and flexibility of a lifestyle to allow the guests to enjoy not only the property but be really engaged and active in the community,” he added.

The L-shaped building features a mix of room configurations with additional area for guests in the suites. They include the usual entertainment and workspace amenities, along with a view of the city skyline or San Gabriel mountains.

R.D. Olson also worked with architectural firm Togawa Smith Martin — a frequent residential and retail designer in Los Angeles — to make sure the hotel could enhance downtown without ignoring Glendale’s visual history.

“They’ve made every attempt in the world to try to pull some of the local finishes and local design concepts of the building’s exterior,” Wilhelm said. “It was very important to ownership that this wasn’t a building that sticks out like a sore thumb, that it truly just kind of flows with the new and seasoned properties that are there.”

Work by Orange County-based R.D. Olson can also be seen in Huntington Beach, Old Town Pasadena and more recently, Maui, Hawaii.

“Our deep familiarity in constructing hospitality projects in urban markets was invaluable for the Hampton Inn & Suites Glendale,” said Colby Woods, project manager for R.D. Olson Construction, in a statement. “Because of our team’s experience, we were able to successfully coordinate a schedule that delivered an exceptional end product for our client and for downtown Glendale.”
