Stretch of Maryland Avenue to be closed during trial run of pedestrian walkway

A 2,500-square-foot stretch of Maryland Avenue will be closed off to traffic beginning Monday for a trial run of the Maryland Paseo, a pedestrian walkway along the street.

Maryland will be closed between the two exits of the Exchange parking lot, basically from Wilson Avenue to Broadway. That means drivers can only make a left turn from one of the exits and only a right turn from the other, according to city officials.

The project is a 30- to 90-day pilot program, said Jennifer McLain, a principal economic development officer with the city.

Vacant storefronts along Maryland Avenue have been converted into art galleries, and tables and chairs will be in the paseo where people can sit and eat lunch or dinner or enjoy a cup of coffee.

There will be live music and interactive performances throughout the month. The first performance will be by the Fair Market Band, which will perform from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by Neptune Cocktail and Aztec Dance Group from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.

There will also be movies shown this month at 7 p.m. on two Fridays. On, Sept. 16, the movie “Pokemon” will be screened, and “Zoopia” will be presented on Sept. 30.
